Cosmetic White Smiles at the Oakwood Dental Centre

Bride-to-be gets a smile white enough to rival her bridal gown

Julia Divers pleaded with Family Matters to help her lose weight and look her best for her July wedding. We were glad to help and companies also offered their services, including The Cosmetic White Smiles Clinic at Oakwood Dental Centre. Dentist Aneu Sood gave her a dream present - a wonderfully white smile.

Blame it on tea, coffee, red wine and definitely cigarettes but, no matter how regimented you are about scrubbing your teeth, time takes its toll.

Discolouration gradually takes the sparkle out of your pearly whites and so it was for bride-to-be Julia Divers.

"I smoked for 15 years," she confessed sheepishly. "I started when I was 14 having a fag on the fields and didn't give up until I was 28."

But, thanks to a plea from the heart to Family Matters to help her look great for her wedding, Julia landed one of the best bridal gifts ever from The Cosmetic White Smiles Clinic, Oakwood Dental Centre, Bishops Drive.

Dentist Aneu Sood offered to give Julia the creme de la creme of teeth treats in time for her big day - tray and laser whitening combined.

Julia (30), of Dickenson Street, Derby, who is due to marry Chris England next month, was thrilled to get the chance to polish up her smile.

"I do work hard to keep my teeth white but my smoking was bound to have had some effect. In fact, from the amount of abuse my teeth have had, it's amazing they've stayed so white. Aneu said they weren't too bad.

"Even so, I told the women at work to bring their sunglasses in this week because my smile would be so dazzling."

Staff and children at Derby Moor Community Sports College in Littleover, where Julia works as a teaching assistant, will, no doubt, be looking on with interest to see Julia's gleaming teeth, the latest in a long line of wedding gifts instigated by Family Matters.

Businesses and individual flocked to help Julia and Chris after Julia aired her plight in Family Matters. She said: "I am getting married on July 29 and I am really unhappy with my weight. I am around two-and-a-half stone overweight and would desperately love to shift some of the wobble.
"To be honest, my other half could do with losing a bit too. I was hoping that Family Matters could take us on board and track our progress as I strive for the elusive size 12 and Chris (34), a delivery driver, works to get his 32ins waist back."

Readers took the couple to their hearts and, since then, Julia has enjoyed "fantastic" free hypnotherapy sessions with Derby's Kat Jacquin to tackle her eating habits and one-to-one nutritional advice from Dot Eley, who runs Lifeline healthy eating classes.

The couple will also put Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers into the shade at the wedding thanks to Dance-d- Beat. It has welcomed them to its weekly jive sessions at Nunsfield House, Alvaston, and is choreographing their first dance for the wedding.

And both the groom's suit and the bride's dress may well have to be taken in as the pair have just been given free membership of Derby's VirginActive gym in the run-up to their big day.

But though she is still battling with her weight - " I've lost a stone so far" - Julia's teeth treat has been uppermost in her mind this week.

"I've always wanted to have my teeth whitened. When I had my first consultation with dentist Aneu Sood I discovered that I had gum problems and they had to be sorted out first. I've been seeing the hygienist."

Julia's gum disease was picked up by Aneu at the initial dental examination.

"I need to check that the teeth are in good general health before teeth whitening can begin," he said.

"I also noted the shade of Julia's teeth and asked about her health history and consumption habits. Once I know the most likely cause of tooth discoloration I can tell people what degree of whitening might be expected and how long the bleaching process might take.

"The treatment is based on an oxidation process. Whitening gel can move through teeth as they are porous. This oxidises coloured pigments in the tooth from yellow to white. The laser teeth whitening process activates the gel and maximises the whitening procedure."

Julia's treatment began with tray whitening. Impressions of her teeth were taken to make custom-made bleaching trays. "This increases their effectiveness and minimises side effects, including potential damage to the gums caused by leaking of bleaching solution from ill fitting, over-the-counter whitening kits," said Aneu.

The bleaching trays are then fitted, one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth. They cover each tooth but stop just short of lying on the gum tissue.

Julia was then given teeth whitener (carbamide peroxide) and instructed on its use. She had to wear the trays for three to four hours daily for seven to 10 days.

Last week Julia's teeth were ready for the final stage - laser teeth whitening.

Said Aneu: "A professional dental whitening gel is applied evenly to the surfaces of the teeth and then I use a Biolase laser to activate and work in conjunction with the whitening gel to gently and safely whiten the teeth."

Less than an hour later Julia emerged with her Hollywood smile. "My teeth look so clean and sparkly. I am absolutely thrilled."

The combination whitening treatment Julia had is currently on special offer at Cosmetic White Smiles, priced £580. A teeth whitening wedding package is also available at £900 per couple.
