Bad breath or halitosis is a common problem that is faced by many people in their day to day lives. Bad odour from your mouth can be a very unpleasant experience, both for the person suffering from it and for people around you. Bad breath is embarrassing and can lead to social problems such as people avoiding you or speaking to you, which in turn can lead to isolation and social stigma. It is therefore an important issue, and to avoid facing such a problem, it is paramount to look after your teeth and gums and treat any symptoms of halitosis as soon as they arise.

Bad breath can be caused due to a number of reasons, many of which can be addressed and tackled, but good oral hygiene has to be maintained at all times. Brushing your teeth after every meal and gargling with mouthwash often helps to keep your mouth free from bad breath. Often, the food that we eat can cause our mouths to smell because small remnants of food can get stuck between our teeth and remain there. Brushing and flossing your teeth properly and regularly will help to avoid this, so that any food debris is removed from between your teeth. The type of food that we eat can also make a big difference to our breath, with some foods eg: garlic and onions causing more odour and bad breath than others.

There are times when you may suffer from gum disease and this can also affect your breath. Should this be the case, it is essential to see your dentist or dental hygienist for suitable treatment. Bad breath can also be tackled by medical intervention for people suffering halitosis to a more serious degree.
