Root Canal Treatment Explained

2013 August 8

Root canal treatment(also known as endodontics) is a treatment which is often carried out by a specialist dentist.

It is an advanced dental treatment option used to save teeth which may have decayed or become severely compromised and are in danger of being lost.

There are obvious advantages of saving your original teeth rather than having them extracted and replaced with alternative options such as dental implants or dentures, both from a functional perspective and an aesthetic one. However, the long term outcome cannot be guaranteed for a tooth being treated with root canal treatment. Even if a tooth is saved, it is possible that the same tooth may become compromised in the future and this may consequently result in extraction of the tooth.

Root Canal Treatment is the process of removing the damaged pulp of the affected tooth. The pulp contains the blood vessels, connective tissue and nerves of the tooth and when it becomes infected or damaged, the tooth becomes compromised leading to severe toothache. If the tooth is not treated, it can lead to on going decay and spread of infection which can further damage the tooth and finally lead to the affected tooth needing extraction.

If you are suffering from severe toothache which is being caused by pulp infection or damage, it is important to consult your dentist who can advise if you require root canal treatment. Once you know that you require root canal treatment, getting it done as soon as possible by a specialist dentist is important as this will prevent further damage to your tooth.
