Dental Implants Information

2013 August 12

Are you wanting to replace missing teeth  but the think that a denture is the only option you have? The Good news is that with all the advances in modern dentistry, you have many options potentially available to you today.

Dental implants  are titanium substitutes for missing teeth but they look and function like real teeth.

They are strong and hard wearing and are widely used to replace a missing tooth or teeth.

For patients considering replacement of missing teeth with one(or several)  implants, here are some guidelines to help you:

Speak to your Implant Dentist who can assess your dental condition before advising if you are suitable to receive a dental  implant.

He/She will need to make sure you are a suitable candidate for dental implants and have enough bone density and structure in your jaw to support this.

It is important to get advice from a dentist who deals in dental implants as it does require additional and further dental training.

Insertion of the dental implants :

The implant is placed into the socket of your tooth where it is drilled into place to meet the bone in your jaw. This is important because the implant needs to be held in place and stabilised by surrounding bone which will grow and integrate around the implant. Implants are usually made of titanium because this material merges well into the jawbones.

The Healing Process :

Once the dental implant has been placed, it is essential to allow time for the bone to grow around and merge with the implant to stabilise it in your jawbone- this can take many months.

Placement of the post :

The jawbone needs to merge with the implant; Once this has occurred, a post can be attached to hold in place the new crown or artificial tooth

Placement Of Crown:

The gums will need to heal after the post has been positioned. When they have healed completely, an impression of the tooth can be taken by your implant dentist. This impression allows the dentist to make a new crown to be placed on the post.

Dental Implants need looking after and caring for in the same way as normal teeth. You will need to carry out daily brushing and flossing of your implant and attend regular dental check-ups.

Looking after your teeth and gums and keeping a healthy mouth will ensure good oral bone support which in turn should help you keep and maintain your dental implants for many years

Options for Straightening Teeth

2013 August 8
beautiful-white-straight-teeth-

first impressions count

There are a vast array of Orthodontics or dental treatments to straighten teeth and many of these are undertaken, not just by teenagers but also by adults and more mature individuals these days.

There are many Orthodontic and Tooth Straightening Treatments available from cosmetic dentists in derby ; These can range from the old fashioned metal ‘train tracks’ of days gone by to the latest up to date treatments using invisible braces.

Some of the many tooth Straightening Treatments available today include:

  • Metal Braces(Also known as Traditional Orthodontics) are bracket and wire and bracket devices which are placed on the front of teeth to straighten and realign them. They work by generating gradual force on your teeth which moves them into the desired alignment and position. This type of orthodontics can take up to three years to achieve the required results.
  • Lingual Braces are invisible as they are worn on the backs of your teeth. They are  fixed in place with small metal brackets, similar to  ‘wire and bracket’ traditional braces but are not on display on the fronts of your  teeth
  • Invisalign- Clear and almost invisible , these are aligners/retainers which are easily removable for eating and drinking, comfortable to wear  and  low maintenance. They straighten teeth by slowly moving them into the correct position, realigning them into place over a shorter time frame(eg: months rather than years) when compared with traditional metal brackets.                                                                                                                                                                                      The advantage of Invisalign treatment is the shorter time required to gain results(12-18 months) when compared with train tracks or metal braces.

You might regret having missed out on having your teeth straightened as a teenager or maybe you did wear a brace but it didn’t quite work and you were disappointed with the result. However, it’s never too late to consider teeth straightening dentistry treatments and you’re never too old to wear a brace, especially with all the invisible braces available today.

The beauty of the more modern techniques compared with the traditional and more prominent metal braces of the past is they are so much more aesthetically acceptable.

Wearing a brace is also useful to straighten overlapping and overcrowded teeth or address gaps and spaces in between teeth and generally straighten a crooked smile. With your cosmetic dentist and orthodontist now offering so many options and choices in cosmetic dentistry treatments for straightening teeth , nobody need ever know you are wearing a ‘brace’ at all.

Root Canal Treatment Explained

2013 August 8

Root canal treatment(also known as endodontics) is a treatment which is often carried out by a specialist dentist.

It is an advanced dental treatment option used to save teeth which may have decayed or become severely compromised and are in danger of being lost.

There are obvious advantages of saving your original teeth rather than having them extracted and replaced with alternative options such as dental implants or dentures, both from a functional perspective and an aesthetic one. However, the long term outcome cannot be guaranteed for a tooth being treated with root canal treatment. Even if a tooth is saved, it is possible that the same tooth may become compromised in the future and this may consequently result in extraction of the tooth.

Root Canal Treatment is the process of removing the damaged pulp of the affected tooth. The pulp contains the blood vessels, connective tissue and nerves of the tooth and when it becomes infected or damaged, the tooth becomes compromised leading to severe toothache. If the tooth is not treated, it can lead to on going decay and spread of infection which can further damage the tooth and finally lead to the affected tooth needing extraction.

If you are suffering from severe toothache which is being caused by pulp infection or damage, it is important to consult your dentist who can advise if you require root canal treatment. Once you know that you require root canal treatment, getting it done as soon as possible by a specialist dentist is important as this will prevent further damage to your tooth.

Root Canal Treatment : Facts About Aftercare

2013 July 27

Root canal treatment is an advanced form of dental treatment aimed at saving a tooth which may otherwise be lost as it may have been affected adversely by dental caries and decay, damage or injury

Saving and preserving your teeth rather than losing them is a natural choice for obvious reasons; Functionally, your own teeth will be stronger and work better for eating, biting and chewing and cosmetically, gaps and lost teeth are not a great look!

Should your tooth or teeth require root canal treatment, it is not without some risks and the outcome from the treatment cannot always be guaranteed.

Some of the possible pitfalls that may arise are:

  •  The treated tooth may still be lost at some point in the future as it is impossible to predict the long treatment prognosis of any tooth which has undergone root canal treatment. Factors such as an individual’s healing capacity, oral health and the strength of the remaining tooth structure will influence longevity of the treated tooth.
  •  The risks of re-infection after an infected tooth have been treated with root canal treatment are slim; however, if it does occur, the tooth will require further treatment or extraction.
  •  Treated teeth can become discoloured or darken following root canal treatment.
  • This can be addressed with treatments such as teeth whitening to reverse tooth discolouration and improve the appearance of your smile.
  •  Discomfort and toothache may still continue to be present after root canal treatment; Your dentist may prescribe painkillers and/or antibiotics to overcome this but if it remains unresolved, further dental treatment may be required.
  • A tooth which has undergone root canal treatment will often require a crown or ‘cap’ to protect it as it may not be as resilient or strong as it was when it was a normal and healthy tooth.

The secret To beautiful teeth

2013 July 19

Everybody wants to have a beautiful smile. We would all prefer to have shiny, bright, sparkling teeth. Laser teeth whitening is an effective procedure that can create this effect. As we grow up, our teeth become discoloured. Very few adults have immaculately white teeth. Drinking coffee, tea, red wine and so forth, results in yellowing or discoloration of the teeth. Smoking can also have a great impact on tooth colour.

Laser teeth whitening is very popular and is used by many people. It is also known as ‘power whitening’. While it is quite an expensive method, dentists believe that this is the best way to whiten teeth.

During the whitening procedure, a rubber block is placed over your teeth, which protects the gums. The whitening product, a type of gel, is then applied to the teeth. To activate it, a laser is used. This triggers a reaction in the bleaching product, which is how the whitening effect comes about. The majority of cosmetic dentists consider laser teeth whitening to provide excellent results.

An appointment with a our Derby cosmetic dentist to undergo laser teeth whitening treatment at  a time convenient to suit you is all you might need to transform your teeth and smile.

Dental Treatment For Missing Teeth

2013 July 17

Dental Implants are one of the solutions available for the replacement of lost or missing teeth.

Whether you have lost a tooth or teeth due to dental decay or disease, as a result of old age or due to an accident or injury, your dentist should be able to offer you suitable options to replace the gaps left as a result of tooth loss.

Other than dental implants, your dentist may suggest a denture or a bridge as these dental treatment options can be used to replace missing teeth, however dental implants are growing in popularity as they are a good long term solution and feel like real teeth and can also help preserve health tissue around surrounding teeth when carried out correctly.

So what is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial substitute for a tooth but it looks and feels like a real tooth. It is usually made from titanium and is placed into your jawbone to securely hold in place a denture or to support a crown and bridge fitted over it.

A dental implant can replace one missing tooth, several missing teeth or can be used to carry out a full mouth reconstruction to replace an entire mouth of missing teeth.

It is crucial to visit the best dentist you can find for treatments such as dental implants and one who is qualified, trained and well experienced at carrying out this treatment.

You will require a thorough assessment to ensure you are a suitable candidate for dental implants and to ensure you have sufficient oral bone to allow your dental implant to integrate and be held in place securely over the long term.

Healthy Teeth and A Smile For Life

2013 July 14

Your smile, its such an important feature yet can be so overlooked.

At a cosmetic level, it defines your facial appearance and at a deeper level, it defines your character and personality, the person seen by the world .

If your teeth are crooked, discoloured, misshapen or unsightly in some other way, not only can this spoil your smile it can also impact on how you feel about yourself and your confidence and self esteem.

A smile makeover could provide the solution to dental problems and might also help to achieve a healthier set of teeth and gums.

Cosmetic and preventative dentistry can make not only a startling and noticeable difference to the appearance of  teeth but also to your overall and long term dental health.

There are many cosmetic dental treatments to help achieve a healthy looking, whiter and younger smile such as porcelain dental veneers to change the shape, size and orientation of teeth or address gappy or goofy smiles and crooked teeth, teeth whitening to lighten and whiten teeth,  dental implants and dental bridges to replace missing teeth and white fillings which are mercury free and are also a more aesthetically pleasing option than amalgam or silver fillings. Any good dentists will always first check the oral health of your teeth and gums and get them healthy before embarking on the treatments that may be recommended or required for a cosmetic dental treatment and a smile makeover.

The cost of cosmetic dental treatments and a smile makeover will vary depending on the cosmetic dentist carrying out your treatment, how complicated the work is and geographical location and where you live. The length of time to achieve a smile transformation can vary from a few days or weeks to several months or longer and will be dependent on the complexity and amount of dental treatment required to achieve the final results you require.

Surveys show that many people who undertake cosmetic dental treatment for cosmetic reasons also reap the benefits of a more positive self image which in term can lead to greater success and positive  interactions both socially and professionally.

Tips for Dealing With Bad Breath (Halitosis)

2013 July 13

That all sensitive issue, would you tell your partner, friend or colleague about it?

Research suggests that 60% of people suffer from chronic bad breath at some point ; many of these are as a result of due oral health issues of which the most common cause is bacteria which has accumulated on the tongue. Other causes of (temporary) bad breath can be eating foods such as onions or garlic, smoking, drinking or a dehydrated mouth.

Should you suffer from bad breath, your first port of call should be your dentist or dental hygienist who should be able to help determine the cause.

Some people keep breath fresh by using breath-freshening products which can be bought over the counter but these are limited in their effectiveness.

Below are some tips on how to minimise halitosis and keep your breath fresher for longer:

  • Clean your tongue, particularly the back surface, with a tooth brush or tongue scraper
  • Brush your teeth and gums effectively and regularly and don’t forget to floss in between your teeth
  • If you are a denture wearer, use an antiseptic solution for overnight soaking
  • Mouthwashes and toothpastes containing chlorine dioxide help eliminate sulphurous gases which can cause bad breath when bacteria breakdown in the mouth
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Avoid dieting or fasting excessively as this can result in the release of odour producing compounds from the mouth
  • Eat foods such as fennel, mint or parsley to counteract mouth odour
  • Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy
